Application Questions

  1. What is Max Legal Licensed Wt?

Max Legal Licensed Wt is the registered weight of the Power Unit (Tractor or Truck).

  2. My vehicle is legal weight. Do I still need to enter axle loads and spacings?

If the application shows that you need to enter the load and spacing then yes, you must enter them.

  3. After I enter the number of axles, I cannot enter the axle weights and spacings.  What do I do?

If this is the first time that you have used the GotPermits.com process, the truck display feature must be installed.  Notification of the required installation may happen a couple different ways.  First, under the Address Bar (where you enter the URL like http://www.GotPermits.com), there may be an Information Bar with a prompt to install an ActiveX control from Bentley Systems.  Click on the Information Bar and follow the instructions to download and install the control.  This prompt may also appear in the Truck Display box below the axle configuration input fields.  Alternatively, you may be prompted with a security dialog box asking if the software from Bentley Systems should be downloaded.  Accept the download and follow the instructions.

Vehicle Routing Questions

  1. Where can I get help on using the map and route selection tools?

Please see the Routing Help page for a good overview of these tools.

  2. If my trip needs to exit and re-enter the state or go through cities within the state, can I get one permit for both portions of my trip?

Yes, when using the Picking method, you can use the "Add Additional Trip" option.  When using the Text Description method, you can use the “New Segment”.  Sample instructions follow for a trip that starts on 470 at the Ohio border, goes to 70, and exits West Virginia on 70 at the Pennsylvania border.  The second part of the trip re-starts at the Pennsylvania border on 79 and goes to 68.

    PICKING

    1. Start the picking command.
    2. Select the start of 470 and then pick once more on 470 to establish the direction.
    3. Pick the end of 70. You will have the first "part" of the trip defined.
    4. Click on "Add Additional Trip" at the bottom of the left side column of options.
    5. Select the start of 79 and then pick once more on 79 to establish the direction.
    6. Pick on 68 and end where you need.

    TEXT BASED

    1. Start the text based routing command.
    2. Start on 470 at state border OH
    3. Go to 70
    4. End at PA
    5. Click New Segment
    6. Start on 79 at PA
    7. Go to 68
    8. Continue definition as appropriate.

  3. The analysis of my selected route failed.  What can I do?

You have several options if your route fails.  First, you can select an alternate route and analyze it.  If it passes, use it.  You can use the Automated Routing option and let the system find a route that can be approved.  Lastly, you can select the option “Request Office Review” and let the state permit technicians see if your requested route can be approved or allow them to find an alternate path for you.

  4. Can I get a description of my clearance and/or load failures?

Clearance and weight failures are graphically depicted on the web page in red and summarized in the analysis status message. However, the states will not allow any more detailed information to be provided.  You can either re-route or submit for office review.

  5. The analysis states that my analysis did not pass.  I select Restrictions and the description talks about parking overnight or limited travel times.  What does this mean?

Your analysis may not pass for the following reasons - vertical clearance failure, horizontal clearance failure, live load bridge analysis failure, and / or a restriction failure.  Clearance and weight failures are summarized in the analysis status message and graphically depicted on the Web page in the user specified failure color, but you cannot get a specific description of the failure.  The restriction text that can be displayed are conditions the state can place on the state highway network that further limit travel beyond the fixed conditions such as clearances and bridge weight limits.  These restriction conditions can be things like construction (temporary closures, lane width restrictions), weather, time of travel, special movement instructions (railroads), etc.  These restrictions can either cause an analysis failure or may just add conditions to a move that can be permitted (see the next question).  If the restrictions cause a failure, you can either re-route or submit the request for office review.

  6. The analysis states that my analysis did pass but encounters some restrictions.  I select Restrictions and the description talks about parking overnight or limited travel times. What does this mean?

You can have a successful analysis but still have a trip that is subject to restrictions.  For example, you do not have any routing failures but may be restricted from moving through a specific area during rush hour.  Those types of restrictions will be shown here and will also be output on the permit document.  This allows you to see the travel restrictions that will be on the permit before you get the permit.  You can accept a permit with the restrictions or re-route or ask for assistance.

  7. How do I save a route so I can use it again later?

On the routing page, select the trip you want to save via the picking, text based, or automated methods.  After you have the trip you want to save, click on the "Save route for future use" link about half way down in the left hand column of options.  You will then be prompted to provide a "name" for the route and the route will be saved. When you want to use that route again in the future, simply change the "method of routing" to "Loading Saved Trip", click the "Load a saved trip" option (which will give you a list of all the routes you have saved), and then analyze the route.

  8. I would like to request weekend movement.  How do I do that?

    West Virginia
  9. :

Any vehicle that does not exceed 14’ wide, 14’6” high, 95’ long, 15’ total overhang (front plus rear), and 110,000 pounds MAY be eligible for weekend travel. There are two ways to receive permission for oversize/overweight travel in West Virginia.  First, you can select the option to “Request Office Review” on the routing page and then enter your request for weekend movement in the Comments text box on the Payment and Delivery page.  Second, if you are potentially eligible for weekend travel, a restriction will be printed on the permit describing the conditions and routes that may be traveled during the weekends. That restriction is reproduced below:

This vehicle may be (but is not necessarily) eligible for weekend travel on some or all of the specified routes. Permission for weekend movement is granted ONLY if the vehicle meets the requirements listed below for each route specified on this document. If unsure of weekend travel eligibility on any of the specified routes, contact the WVDOT Permit Office PRIOR to moving.

Weekend movement is allowed for loads up to 110,000 lbs. on Interstates and 4-lane roads, up to 90,000 lbs. on US (2-lane) routes, and legal weight on all other highways, with the following maximum dimensional limits.

    - Interstate and Other Divided Routes

14-6 high, 14-0 wide, 95-0 long, 15-0 total overhang (front and rear)

NOTE: Interstate and other divided routes are all full or partially controlled access routes as shown on the West Virginia Map

    - US and Selected Routes

14-0 high, 12-0 wide, 75-0 long, 10-0 total overhang (front and rear)

    NOTE: Selected Routes are WV-2, WV-3 in Boone County, WV-9, WV-10 in Lincoln & Logan Counties, WV-25, WV-29, WV-55 in Hardy County, WV-61, WV-75, WV-94, WV-127, WV-259, and WV-601

Post-Application Questions

  1. My analysis passed.  Why was I not able to get my permit right away?

Each state has their own limits to which permits can be system issued.  After one or more of these limits is exceeded, the application must be reviewed and issued by state personnel.

For Nebraska and South Dakota, the request is seamlessly forwarded to the State after the payment page.  If the request passes the State rules it will be system issued.   If for some reason, the permit request is not issued you will need to check with the State in regards to the reason why.

For West Virginia, GotPermits.com is allowed to system issue permits up to certain maximum dimensions.  After one or more of these limits is exceeded, the application must be reviewed and issued by state personnel. The current maximum dimensions for GotPermits.com System Issuance for West Virginia are: 14’ wide; 14’6” high; 100’ long, 150,000 pounds GVW and 10 feet combined front and rear overhang.

  2. Can I change an application after I submit it?

Yes, if the State has not begun to process your application, you may edit it.  Go to the My Permits page.  Click on the appropriate Request ID.  You are now recalling that permit request from the state so that you can edit it.  Once you select the Request ID, you need to go all the way through the application process and re-submit the application; even if you are not making any changes.  Otherwise, the application will be treated as an abandoned application.

  3. My permit request is not shown on My Permits and I have not received my permit.  What do I do?

First, make sure that you have the filter set to “ALL”.  Next, if you click the Request ID you are actually recalling that permit request from the state so that you can edit it.  Should you do this by accident, you need to go all the way through the application process and re-submit the application.  Otherwise, the application will be treated as an abandoned application.  Note:  If the state has already begun to process the application you will not be allowed to edit it.
